BRITISH CULTURE

What is British culture?

England,Scotland and Wales each have very different histories, customs and people.Within England itself there is a vast difference between the reserved south and more openly welcoming north.

A positive aspect of British culture is continual creativity - often cited by international commentators as the most creatively vibrant culture on earth.Much of this was actually an often violent reaction against stifling mainstream culture and society as well as grim social conditions.

Working class culture created the exuberant styles and street fashions of teddy boys ('tudors'), mods, skinheads, headbangers, punks, goths, new romantics and football terrace culture - subcultures which have since spread throughout the world.

Long established cultural traditions include morris and maypole dancing,Beefeaters,Pearly Kings and Queens, pantomime, tea drinking, the great British pub and less mainstream druid and pagan rituals.Traditional ancient folk songs have turned over time into modern nursery rhymes for children.Festivals include Hogmanay, bonfire night(Guy Fawkes night),pancake day and many more localised regional celebrations including the Nutters Dance,Riding of the Marches,Beltane,Well Dressing and various druid and pagan festivals.

Traditional British food includes the cornish pasty, melton mowbray pork pie, shepherds pie, toad in the hole, fish & chips, plum cake and in recent decades a British variant of curry.

British drinking culture tends to be more boisterous, excessive and lively than elsewhere in the world.Sometimes this descends into unruly behavior and binge drinking. In general it leads to high spirited rowdiness and fun as seen here
